한국 블록버스터영화의 자존심을 살릴 것인가. <내츄럴시티>에 우선적으로 쏠리는 관심은 그동안 작품성에서나 흥행에서나 부진을 면치 못했던 초대형 프로젝트의 첫 성공작이 될 것인지 여부다. 그건 <내츄럴시티>가 후발 블록버스터라는 점 때문만이 아니라 개봉을 한참 앞둔 시점부터 “비주얼이 뛰어나다”는 소문이 퍼진 데 따른 기대효과 때문인지도 모른다. 이러한 기대에는 <21세기 모노리스> 같은 뮤직비디오나 <유령> 등을 통해 영상을 만들어내는 데 탁월한 역량을 입증한 민병천 감독의 존재가 어느 정도 영향을 끼쳤을 것 또한 틀림없다.
Will it save the pride of Korean blockbuster? All the attention falling onto ‘Natural City’ is whether it will be the first successful blockbuster. Not only is it the latest blockbuster but there is already a rumor spreading out that is has great visual works. There is no doubt that director Min Byeong-cheon, who has shown outstanding works through ‘21st century Monolith’ and ‘Ghost’, is the main cause for all the expectation.
<내츄럴시티>의 배경은 22세기를 얼마 앞둔 2080년, 우주여행과 사이보그가 일반화된 세상이다. 주인공은 무단이탈 사이보그 제거를 임무로 하는 요원 R(유지태). 폐기처분될 운명의 사이보그 리아(서린)를 한없이 사랑하는 그는 그녀의 재생을 위해 자신의 직장과 친구를 배신하고 탈출을 시도한다. 인간과 사이보그의 사랑을 그린다는 점에서 <블레이드 러너>를 연상케 하는 이 영화는 ‘SF멜로’를 지향하고 있다. 꽉 짜여진 시스템으로부터 탈출하려는 주인공들이다보니 액션이 없을 수 없겠지만, 어디까지나 이야기의 중심은 이루어지기 어려운 사랑에 관한 것이란 얘기다. 만약 화려한 영상에 걸맞게 탄탄한 이야기가 뒷받침된다면 <내츄럴시티>는 ‘한국형 블록버스터’의 신기원을 열지도 모른다.
The story takes place in year 2080, where space travel and cyborg is generalized. The main character R(Yoo Ji-tae) is a cop hunting down renegade cyborgs. For Ria(Seo Lin), the cyborg he loves, R betrays his work and friends and tries to escape. This SF melodrama about the love between human and cyborg reminds us of ‘Blade Runner’. Escaping from the well structured system inevitably causes action but the main focus is on the love that is hard to achieve. If the plot fits well into the fancy image, ‘Natural city may open new era of Korean blockbuster.
